Play Expert Sudoku Online
The top of our ladder – and deliberately beyond it: an expert Sudoku awaits, free in your browser, with no ads, no sign-up, and no clock rushing your chains.
Expert Sudoku is our top tier, built so the standard technique ladder is provably not enough: singles, pairs, triples, and box-line logic will stall, and what-if chains take over. Every puzzle still has exactly one machine-verified solution. Play free in your browser – no ads, no sign-up – and expect a genuinely slow, satisfying solve.
Rules: one guarantee matters here
Digits 1–9, once per row, column, and box — unchanged. What matters on this tier is the guarantee behind it: every expert puzzle has exactly one solution, machine-verified. However deep a what-if chain takes you, there is always solid ground: one line of reasoning is right, and the puzzle cannot betray you with a second solution. Givens are at their sparsest here, and there is — as everywhere on CalmPlay — no timer.
Strategy: when the ladder ends
Expert is defined by a property, not a mood: our generator keeps only puzzles where the standard ladder — singles, pairs, triples, box-line reductions — demonstrably stalls. So the strategy has two phases:
Phase one: empty the ladder
Everything from Hard applies. Work the grid until the nameable techniques are truly exhausted and your notes are complete. On this tier that phase will end with cells unresolved — by design, not because you missed something (though it never hurts to re-scan).
Phase two: chains
Find a cell with exactly two candidates in a well-connected region. Follow one candidate: write its consequences as a marked trail. Two outcomes are possible, and both are wins — a contradiction proves the other candidate, or the trail completes consistently and cracks the bottleneck. This is not guessing; it is case analysis with a safety net, and the uniqueness guarantee is what makes it airtight.
Take your time — an expert grid is meant to be an evening companion, not a speed run. If you’d rather build up to it, step back to Hard, or compare all four tiers on the Sudoku overview.
Frequently asked questions
Is expert Sudoku solvable without guessing?
Honest answer: every expert puzzle has exactly one solution – we verify that by machine – but unlike our tiers up to Hard, the standard technique ladder is provably insufficient here. Disciplined what-if chains (follow a candidate, find the contradiction, conclude the opposite) are part of the craft at this level, and with notes they are logic, not luck.
Is this the same as 'evil', 'extreme', or 'diabolical' Sudoku?
Different sites use different names for their hardest tier – evil, extreme, diabolical, fiendish. Ours is defined precisely: generated so that singles, pairs, triples, and box-line reductions demonstrably stall, while a unique solution is guaranteed. If you enjoy those puzzles elsewhere, this tier is for you.
How should I even start an expert grid?
Exactly like a hard one: harvest every single, pair, triple, and box-line deduction first. Experts aren't hard everywhere – they have a bottleneck. Complete notes make the bottleneck visible; that's where your chain begins.
What is a what-if chain, concretely?
Pick a cell with two candidates and follow one of them: mark its consequences step by step. If the trail reaches a contradiction, the other candidate was right all along – a fully rigorous conclusion. Our notes mode is built for exactly this kind of careful bookkeeping.
